CELLO | Trey Lee

A marvelous protagonist...superb cellist” – Lorin Maazel

Hailed a “miracle” by Gramophone magazine, Hong Kong-born cellist Trey Lee collaborates with artists and orchestras such Maazel, Ashkenazy, Bashmet, Sinaisky, Mikko Franck, Philharmonia London, Philharmonic Orchestra Radio France, Munich Chamber Orchestra, among others. His concerto debut at Carnegie Hall won him a standing ovation, with The New York Times declaring him “the excellent cellist… with enveloping richness and lyrical sensitivity.”  He is often featured at major events around the world such as the launch of The IMAGINE Project to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child with Hugh Jackman, Yoko Ono, and ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus; and the Gala Celebration of Hong Kong’s return to China for President Xi Jinping on CCTV live for over 1 billion people.

Besides his musical studies in America and Europe, Lee also received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Harvard University. He has founded two music festivals in Asia: the Musicus Fest and Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival.

An advocate of Chinese music and culture, Lee is Artistic Director of Musicus Society, which aims to promote Chinese culture internationally and through cross-cultural collaboration. He gave the world premiere of Bright Sheng’s latest cello concerto, The Blazing Mirage, inspired by Dunhuang. The Dream of the Red Chamber Capriccio is his latest effort to realize Wang Liping’s masterpiece onto the cello with orchestra. He has released several albums on EMI and Naxos, and serves as a UNICEF ambassador.
