ABOUT RODIN

Boris Eifman’s new ballet, Rodin, is dedicated to the life and creative work of the great sculptor Auguste Rodin and his apprentice, lover and muse, Camille Claudel.

The story of their passionate relationship is full of drama. For 15 years Rodin and Claudel had been one sensual and creative body. But their breakup dealt a deathblow to Camille’s mental health and marked the beginning of her destruction. Almost forgotten, isolated from the outside world, vegetating in misery, Claudel went out of her mind. She was convinced of a deliberate conspiracy against her, with Rodin the main perpetrator. She spent 30 years in a mental asylum, where she died in 1943, forgotten and left by everyone.

Rodin is a massive artistic utterance about the tragic nature of the lives of geniuses. With the help of the unique body language of the modern psychological ballet, which the choreographer honed in previous works (Onegin, The Seagull, Anna Karenina, Russian Hamlet, and others), Eifman presents a new conception of the world of human passions studied masterfully by Rodin and Claudel in their works, and also creates a masterpiece dedicated to the incomprehensible mystery of the creative process.

ST. PETERSBURG EIFMAN BALLET

Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg was established by Boris Eifman in 1977 (the original name of the company was the Leningrad New Ballet). The concept of the New Ballet was more than innovative for its time: from the first days of its work it was conceived and developed as an experimental laboratory, a ballet theatre for one choreographer. Today Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg is renowned among ballet lovers all over the world for such repertoires as Tchaikovsky; Red Giselle, Anna Karenina, Requiem and etc. These works not only represent the highest artistic level of achievements of the contemporary Russian ballet, but also turn the audience to the immortal spiritual heritage of Russian and world culture that inspired the choreographer and his dancers.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR & CHOREOGRAPHER | Boris Eifman

Boris Eifman, the founder of Eifman Ballet, is regarded as one of the leading choreographers in the world. He was born in Siberia in 1946 and received his ballet degree from the department of choreography of the Leningrad Conservatory in 1972. He has created more than forty ballet performances and obtained honorary titles such as the People’s Artist of Russia, the Laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation and many others. Forming a special and innovative repertoire based upon the rich traditions of Russian psychological theater, and new choreography of the 21th century are among the key priorities within the artistic mission of Boris Eifman and his company. He defines his genre as “psychological ballet”. “Throughout my creative life I’ve been expanding the boundaries of the ballet theatre and, first and foremost, searching for a body language capable of expressing the life of human spirit. Dance isn’t a physical process for me, but a spiritual one”, says Boris Eifman.

“The ballet world in search of a major choreographer need search no more. He is Boris Eifman!”
