The Shanghai Gallery of Antique Music Boxes and Automata

The Shanghai Gallery of Antique Music Boxes and Mechanical Works is located in the Oriental Art Center. In China, it is the only special gallery focusing on European art and history in terms of music boxes. Its collection includes more than 200 antique music boxes and western automata.
The collection of antique music boxes mainly displays cylinder music boxes and disc music boxes. It also contains diverse musical mechanism such as a street organ and a singing bird. The automata section collects masterpieces of the peak period of such contraceptions (1865-1905) as well as objects of modern times.
The most important and meaningful object in the collection is the oldest music box in the world. It was made in 1796 by the most gifted Swiss watch-maker Antoine Favre. In this artisan monument, mechanisms at its purest and music are combined together in amazing harmony.
